Class Descriptions

Ballet

By combining the French, Italian, Danish and Russian methods of dance, Lelia Haller developed her unique style of ballet which is the foundation for our ballet school today.  We offer ballet classes from ages 3 and up.

PRE-BALLET

The joy of ballet begins with the pre-ballet class, which is filled with fun, non-stop activity and begins the development of spatial awareness all in a safe, nurturing environment.  Students ages 3-5 years begin with a warm-up at the barre followed by centre work including the five basic positions,  coordination exercises across the floor and culminating in pantomime dances, where the art of story-telling is introduced.  In pre-ballet the students will also become acquainted with French ballet terminology such as plié, tendu, rélévé, battement and port de bras.

Ballet teaches children discipline and confidence, how to follow directions closely, and encourages life skills like creativity, musicality and physicality.  With a focus on both the mind and the body, ballet helps the young dancer to be his or her best.

BASIC

The Basic ballet class allows students to learn the basics of classical ballet in a fun, low pressure atmosphere.  The goal is to enjoy movement while perfecting the 5 basic steps: jeté, assemblé, glissade, ballonné and pas de basque.  Ballet technique, ballet terminology, body alignment and posture are introduced to the student.  Students begin class with barre work, progress to centre work, proceeding to port de bras, adagio and on to basic steps like pliés and tendus, while learning the correct way to place and move the body.  Students can build poise, strength, coordination, flexibility and grace through consistent practice.

INTERMEDIATE I

Intermediate I ballet classes teach students correct technique through execution of barre work, center, and across the floor exercises. Better understanding of body alignment, movement, carriage of upper body, and flexibility are learned.

Pointe work begins with exercises to gain the necessary foot, ankle, and leg strength and flexibility needed to execute proper pointe technique.  Students are provided with the knowledge and repetition needed to be able to fully get up on pointe while maintaining proper positions throughout the entire body.  As a result of  training correct students will develop very strong ankles, body awareness, and core stability.

Jazz

These classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of styles. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.

Ages 6 and up.

Tumbling

Also referred to as floor gymnastics, common moves performed in tumbling include flips, somersaults, tucks, handstands and handsprings.

Ages 6 and up.
